What a wonderful life!

Some days when they call me in the morning the last thing on earth that I want to do is to get up. I’m so tired. Not just in lack of sleep, but tired on everyone on board, tired of always being after in the schoolwork, tired of getting up on deck and laying there for hours and freezing, and tired of everything. This wasn’t one of those mornings. This was more one of the morning watches that makes me go up all those mornings that I don’t want to, this was one of those mornings that I’ll never forget, and that I’ll talk about to my grandchildren. But actually it wasn’t a very special morning. The biggest different was that I took the time to enjoy the moments and I decided to remember all the beautiful sceneries.

4 o clock in the morning seems really early, but not when you get used to it. Then it’s a wonderful time to get up. On deck the moon was big and round. He used the glassy ocean as a looking glass and sent us a big and bright smile. The cosy yellow light trailed along the water before hitting the boat and all the beautiful play of colours continued on the heaven between the thin layer of sky’s. It was much warmer than it has been so far on the journey, and we could leave our thick clothes, hats and gloves in the cabin. It was absolutely no wind, and Gunilla made no speed. The whole watch we spend fixing the sails. First we braced, then we took the sails in before we spent the last hours furling them. A normal watch maybe, but really a watch worth to remember. I love when we get to “sail”, and it don’t matter if we set the sails up, braces or take the sails in. It is fun anyway. First working together as a team on deck, then going up in the masts. Hanging there, 30 meters above see level in the night is an amazing feeling. It is dark and above you is a magnificent star heaven. Your best friends are hanging there next to you and you are making foolish jokes. If it is a lucky day we can maybe see some dolphins playing in front of the boat. On port side is Portugal, and on starboard is the never-ending Atlantic Ocean. What a wonderful life!
